From the intricate prints to the bold designs and colours on the fabrics, African clothing exudes confidence and style when worn, the true definition of luxury.
Over the years, several African designers have broken out on the fashion scene commanding both African and global runways- these designers are redefining luxury, one outfit at a time.
In July 2020, Anifa Mvuemba set
the pace for the future of runway by
holding a virtual fashion show for her line, Pink Label Congo. Using 3D modelling, she created invisible models that displayed her designs. This was her first fashion show since she launched Hanifa. A dream that began with her posting a picture of the dress she made for her 21st birthday, she released her first collection in 2012. From her use of bold colours to designs and fabrics that drape well on any figure, Hanifa can best be described as a “chic, contemporary, and timeless brand for women without limits.”
Anifa borrowed heavily from her home country, the Democratic Republic of Congo, for her latest collection. Aside from bringing out the best in fabrics and prints from Congo, the collection also served as a form of activism for her as she sought to address ethical and environmental concerns around mining sites in a country rich in minerals.

A presentation that paid homage to the Iponeng, the small town he grew up in South Africa, he collaborated with South African photographer Kristin-Lee Moolman and Sierra Leone-born stylist Ibrahim Kamara to create a series of photos that gave a nod to everyday life through his designs that are inspired by the simplest of things- including his grandmother’s kitchen tablecloth.

The collection consists of pieces of modern and functional pieces that are redefining formal and casual wear. She has had the opportunity to present a show at the New York Fashion Show, as she seeks to bring out African culture in an industry that has been westernized by more mainstream non-African designers.
Her career was catapulted after she showcased at local fashion events Tribal Chic and Fashion High Tea where her first collections were well received.
